Journalism in Syria

The Syria Media Literacy Lab project promotes collaborative work grounded in media quality standards, with a strong focus on information examination and verification by media professionals, in an environment where disinformation continues to grow.

We want to help promote an open, professional media landscape that represents the diversity and rich culture of Syria.

Syria’s media landscape is marked by fragmentation and the coexistence of very different journalistic milieus. The political and regional divisions of the civil war have decisively shaped the field, leading to the emergence of distinct journalist groups aligned with regional-political divisions, areas formerly controlled by the opposition, and areas under former regime control.

In these contexts, diverse journalistic cultures have developed, each aligning to varying degrees with new political power structures.

On one side stands a younger, emerging generation of journalists from north-western Syria — particularly Idlib and parts of Aleppo — who previously worked in opposition-held territories. On the other side are journalists who worked in Damascus under the Assad regime. These groups differ not only in their political outlook and understanding of journalism’s role in society, but also in their professional skills and working conditions – but are alle very motivated and want to contribute to a new Syria.
